New Post: Getting a project to compile

This question makes me feel really silly, but it is incredibly frustrating. I have installed both IronPython and IronStudio [the VS 2008 Studio Shell] on a 64 bit Windows 7 box. I installed these programs to learn Python and to see how the language could be used in a VS environment.

I have a lot of prior experience with Visual Studio in both VB and VC# [from the old compiled Quick Basic [!] up to VS 2005] and have never had any problems compiling a project.

The entire installation appears to have gone well, VS comes up with the standard set of Windows and the code editor and forms designer appears to work. I also got ipy.exe, ipyw, ipy64.exe, and ipyw64.exe working.

I can use both ipy64 in interactive mode and to run a saved py script.

However, I tried to make my own "Hello World" application by putting up one form with a label that says "Hello World". The only thing I did was to color the background of the form, the labelbox and the font using the properties window. I set the form as the startup location in the Project properties. Then I ran the build and got an exe. No errors.

When I try to run the created exe, nothing at all happens.

So then I tried running form.py as a script against the ipyw64.exe program. Again nothing happens.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong. This must be a simple lack of understanding.

I've just installed IronPython Studio on Windows 7. There are no entries for category/templates in the New | File option. I see discussions about new projects, but not files. I'm trying to add a dialog to my project.

Hi,

I rather urgently need an ironPython editor that will allow me to browser the object librarys

the intellisense would be nice. I was going to use IronPython Studio but read some bad reviews

and also I need to know how to request Form data in IronPython so I can validate some information

thats sent from a .net application before insert.

Hi all,

I tried to install the ironpythonstudioisolatedsetup file - it failed the first 2 times with "files not found", then the third time it appeared to install ok.

When I tried to run it, I got the same "files not found" error. So, I uninstalled it.

Since then my Visual Studio project - which used IronPython and the Scripting engine now returns "An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B)" every time I try to run or compile.

Full error:

I've now wasted a day reinalling/uninstalling anything python related (although a reinstall of IronPython 2.6 wouldn't let me as it claims I have the dot net 4.0 framework - which I don't), the IronPython 2.7 won't let me install it as it thinks I DON'T have the dot net 4.0 framework. Catch 22.

I had people arrive this morning from Canada who were to look at this project. They fly back on Sunday. It's starting to look very much like they won't get to see this, so their flights were wasted.

Just a friendly warning to others NOT to install this. It WILL be painful.

Hello,

I'm beginner in python, I installed IronPython (IP), and when I created a new WPF project, I got that error message because the CodeDomProvider was not registered.

i had registered the IronPython CodeDomProvider manually, as in readme.html on installation dir, but still having trouble in creating WPF projects. To see the error message that the IP return, Click here

unintentionally i clicked YES (SIm) in the error message, and now no longer able to create WPF projects.

could someone help me?

Thank you guys for posting these solutions. I was really struggling with this myself. I ended up going with credford's solution, which worked pretty slick.

I'd like to eventually get to where I don't rely on the designer at all but, I have to admit, it's really nice when you're first learning the objects and such.

I downloaded and installed the new extension.

I think the VS2008 Python stuff was more featured.

Anyway I encourage those who do it, and shame on Microsoft for preferring F# (do you know what f means?) rather than Python!

Found work-around!!!

Issue is in Visual Studio 2008: I don't know why, but the VS does not like the sub-path 1033 in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\IronPython Studio\1033".

I ran the following steps:

1. I backupped the .zip files in the directory above (the IronPython template files)

2. I deleted the directories "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\IronPython Studio" and "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplatesCache\IronPython Studio\" with all the sub-directories

3. I cleaned Visual Studio 2008 by means of the command (with administrative privileges): devenv /setup (e.g. run cmd as Administrator and locate in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE" folder, then type devenv /setup)

3bis. If you open Visual Studio 2008 and try to create a new project, IronPython templates are not listed more (WPF Application disappears)

4. I created the directory "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\IronPython"

5. I copied in the directory at point 4. the .zip files saved at point 1.

6. With all instances of Visual Studio 2008 closed, I reran devenv /setup like at point 3.

6bis. If you open Visual Studio 2008 and try to create a new project, IronPython templates are all listed in the IronPython folder (see point 4.); notice that Visual Studio 2008 - to create a new template-based project - search into the directory "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplatesCache"

Hi all!

I'm using Windows 7 and I don't find the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\IronPython Studio\Templates\ProjectTemplates".

I also looked for the subfolfolder "IronPython Studio" in all C:\Users directory, but I didn't find anything.

Anyone can help me to find the target directory in Windows 7?

Does Eclipse support IronPython debudding? What about the integration of another features of the language?

Seconded here - I've just wasted a day trying to get this working.

I'm guessing that changes in .NET and VS2008 SP1 mean that you would have to assemble all the legacy packages together in order to get it up and running properly again, or update and rebuild the application, which I'm afraid is the end for me, given that I'm not going to fork out for VS2008 just to do that.

I'm going to try SharpDevelop, or perhaps go to Eclipse instead. It's a real pity.

Hello Everyone,

With the advent of IronPython 2.6 just around the corner, I'd recommend that you do NOT use IronPython studio for IronPython develoment. Even if your fingers are welded to Visual Studio keystrokes, the time you'll spend learning Eclipse is less than the time you'll waste trying to fix the screwups that Studio puts in your code.

Every time I've used IronPython Studio, my code becomes a mess of "4-spaces" and "tabs" intermingled with one another. For some automatic operations (eg method definitions inside of classes), IPyStudio inserts Tabs before each definition. For others, it's spaces.

With IPy 202 and 26, debugging is just plain broken. For some reason the debugger executes each executable line in sequence, completely ignoring function calls, classes, and whatnot. It also can't view variables that are clearly in scope.

Hopefully when IPy 2.6 is out as a release, it will have the things needed to debug inside of Eclipse. Eclipse is almost there... and it's handling of the Python language is far better than that of Visual Studio.

Perhaps the maintainers of IPy studio can be convinced to update the project. The last contact I had with him, he noted that it was a Microsoft sponsored project and they did not intend to do any work on the project after its 1.0 release.

New Post: time.time() module has incorrect time

When I try to use the time module, time.time() returns a number that is too large to make sense. I created a simple form with a button and a textbox that prints the time when the button is clicked. The time that is printed is: 63383082044.2. This is much larger than the expected: 1247510475.9 (or so). The time module works in both Python and IronPython in the command line. Does anyone know why this is happening? Or how I can fix it? (I've tried adding Python 2.5 to the Path, but I got the same result).
